Nickelodeon has just announced a revival of ChalkZone, set to premiere on Nickelodeon sometime in 2016!
The show will have the same premise as the original, however a few changes have been made. According to Candi Milo, Rudy, Snap, and Penny will be recasted as per a creative decision by Nickelodeon. Their new voices haven't been decided yet, but I have a feeling that they'll be replaced with Nick celebs (old and new). Some characters will have decreased roles in the series (Queen Rapsheeba), while others will have an increased role (Reggie). Neither Bill Burnett nor Larry Huber are returning to the series. A brand new writing team has been hired, and the show will now use stock background cues from APM for music as opposed to using Guy Moon (Oh Yeah! Cartoons' season two shorts to mid-season three) or Geoff Levin (mid-season three to the end of the series)
A new character named Sparkle is introduced- she's a pink, female version of Snap who becomes his girlfriend in the series.
Nickelodeon has also announced that the show will now be animated in Adobe flash instead of it's original digital 2D animation. The music video segments have been dropped.
To revive interest in the show, Nickelodeon plans to introduce new lines of ChalkZone merchandise in stores. A line of merchandise aimed at preteen girls primarily featuring Penny will be sold at Claire's. Hot Topic and Spencer's will begin to carry merchandise such as clothes, coffee mugs, and accessories based off of the original 2002 series. Merchandise based off of the 2016 revival, such as toys, clothes, school supplies, and books, will be released at the beginning of 2017. The complete series DVD will get a retail release by Paramount in November 2015, with audio/video glitches fixed, "The Smooch" re-instated, interviews with the cast and crew, audio commentaries on each episode, the OY!C shorts "Chalk Rain" and "Chalk Dad", and options to watch the music videos on their own (with a karaoke option). Both Nickelodeon and Nicktoons will begin to rerun the original ChalkZone again beginning in June 2015.
While I'm excited to see the new merchandise, the new series makes me feel...very nervous. I mean, we all know what happened to SpongeBob Squarepants, Dexter's Laboratory, and The Powerpuff Girls when their creators left. I hope the show doesn't resort to mean-spirited gags and excessive gross-out humor to be funny. And is it REALLY necessary to give Snap a girlfriend?
But I can't wait to see some of the new merchandise. Hopefully we'll finally get Snap plushies. And the re-issue of the DVD sounds great. Though that probably means I have to drop off my old copy at MovieStop and spend twenty on a brand new copy. Oh well. It's worth it.
April Fools!
